Phil Buytendorp

Biography

Philip Buytendorp was born in Brandon, Manitoba in 1961 into a family of artists. His mother was a potter and his father George is a Dutch-born Canadian painter and fine art restorer. Philip's childhood memories are filled with fond recollections of weekend outings with his father to sketch and paint the landscapes of southern Manitoba countryside. Buytendorp obtained his formal training in art theory at the Brandon Arts Centre in 1978-1979. Although he spent the next twenty years in the construction industry, he found time to sketch scenes from the Southern Alberta Foothills when he lived in Calgary in the early 1980's.

It was not until 1987 when Philip moved to the Fraser Valley, that he started painting in earnest under his father's tutelage. Philip made the decision to devote himself to painting full-time in 1997. He works almost exclusively in oils, using hard board as his surface for 5" by 7" to 9" by 12" sizes and moving into canvases for his larger paintings. He employs brushes and painting knives for application, incorporating strong dramatic strokes that give a "visceral muscularity to the shapes and forms; brawny trees, gloomy skies, jagged shorelines and wind-stirred waters, that comprise his subject matter."Philip uses brilliant color and tone to create a mood and style in his paintings. He is heavily influenced by Impressionism and Expressionism in the style of The Group of Seven and Carl Rungius.

Philip is an avid outdoorsman and loves to hike and explore his wilderness wherever he is living. He paints exaggerated landscapes from the West Coast, southern Alberta foothills and Algonquin Park, all with a fluid use of color, light and textural contrast. His paintings are distinctive and produce an immediate attraction from the viewer.

Philip has been in many group exhibitions and is represented by galleries throughout British Columbia and now in Alberta by The Alicat Gallery.
