Alice Helwig
Biography
Alice S Helwig, a southern Alberta artist, utilizes techniques such as collage,
texturing, glazing and underpainting to explore the prairie landscape. Born
and raised in Lethbridge, Alberta, Helwig drew and painted from an early
age. She has painted in acrylics since she was fourteen years old and often
painted plein aire in the coulee hills close to the family home.
After graduating high school in Lethbridge, Helwig enrolled in a two year
commercial art program at the Medicine Hat College. Upon graduation from
the Visual Communications program, Helwig attended the University of Lethbridge
where she earned her Bachelor of Education Degree (with Distinction).
Looking for adventure, Helwig moved to Fox Lake, a remote Indian village
in Northern Alberta where she taught English and art while maintaining a
studio in her home.
Helwig currently resides in Calgary where she teaches at a private school
and for the City of Calgary at the Wildflower Art Center and gives art workshops
for adult groups.
The theme in her work has varied from figurative compositions, landscapes,
to interiors. Helwig has also worked with a variety of materials (watercolour,
clay, oil paint, pastels, graphite, and stained glass). Recently she has
returned to acrylic paint and the southern Alberta landscape.
Through juried selection, Helwig was invited to attend the Banff Center of
the Arts in a self directed residency in 2005. She continues to explore the
prairie landscape and often paints on site in areas around Calgary and southern
Alberta.
Helwig is represented by Mountain Galleries in Banff, Jasper and Whistler,
and Swirl Fine Art and Design in Art Central, Calgary, Alberta.
