Dennis Magnusson

Biography

Born and raised on a farm in North-Eastern Alberta, Dennis Magnusson grew up in a home alive with music, in which art was always encouraged. In school, Dennis excelled in music and the visual arts.

After completing high school, Dennis moved to Edmonton where he studied electronics, became an officer in the Canadian Army and got married. His art ambitions were put on hold as he pursued a career in telecommunications.

In 2000, Dennis's wife passed away and his telecom career ended shortly thereafter. The following years were unsettled, a time of soul-searching and redefinition of purpose. What emerged was an ever-clearer and growing passion for creative expression in the visual arts. Dennis initially focused on detailed pencil drawings and portraits, gradually moving into the vibrant and exquisite paintings of flowers for which he is now known. "I believe that flowers are nature's most beautiful gift. I enjoy the challenge of capturing that beauty on canvas."

Now residing near the beach in Vancouver, Dennis is deeply inspired by the beauty of the west coast's parks, established neighbourhoods and flower gardens. He now devotes his full attention to his art career, painting daily to capture the beauty of his environment. Dennis has become widely known for his signature, larger-than-life, acrylic portraits of flowers. His paintings are large and bright, over-flowing the canvas, boldly overstating the beauty and drama of the flowers, whether simple and common or exotic and complex.

Dennis is an active member of the Federation of Canadian Artists, was a member of the "Artfully Yours" artist club for 4 years, and has taught drawing classes at a Burnaby Community Center. His work has been included in several gallery group shows and was featured at Peninsula Gallery's "One Part Passion" show in July, 2006. Dennis's work is currently on display in Vancouver's Four Season's Hotel, and is included in private collections across Canada, the United States and internationally.
