Biography

Graham was born September 21, 1968 in Vancouver, B.C. and raised in the community of Springbank. Following high-school he spent some years as an itinerant bartender, general labourer, and world traveller, visiting Southeast Asia, North Africa, the Caribbean, and the U.S.A. Up to this point he had no interest in, or affinity for, the visual arts. He preferred math, physics, and chemistry.

In 1994 he met David Greeley, a genius and true friend who changed his life. Dave was educated in biochemistry and mathematics, had dropped out of "polite society", and was pursuing the art of drawing with great passion. That summer while Dave was drawing Degas, Tiepolo, and Carravaggio, he and Graham had endless discussions on visual physics, the nature of light, the science of sight, and the old masters' use of mythology in the selection of universal themes. A seed was planted. Graham began to suspect that he might possess some artistic ability.

In 1995 some powerful forces were given substance and set in motion. Early in the new year, Graham started carving stone. Summer brought the birth of his daughter Gabrielle.

In 2001 Graham had the good fortune to spend six months in Santa Fe, New Mexico, living and working in the home / studio of Somers Randolph -- modern American master stone-carver, mentor, and friend. Somers introduced Graham to the creative possibilities of abstract form, and something else of great importance. He showed by virtue of his example the attitude and actions of a prosperous, productive artist.

Graham believes talent and inspiration have the same source. Once inspired by a visual idea, a covenant is created -- a sacred, silent contract. It then becomes the artist's responsibility to do justice to the inspiration. This is achieved through discipline, skill, and painstaking work with hammer and chisel, grinder and drill, file and rasp. The figures and shapes are already within the stone, of course. Graham endeavours to reveal them -- to liberate them into the sunshine for all to see.

Graham currently resides in Bragg Creek, Alberta, where he sculpts in a variety of stone types, including alabaster, serpentine, sandstone, marble and soapstone.
